Diazepam – A Brief Overview
Diazepam is one of the most widely prescribed and frequently used drugs in the United States. Diazepam is a psycho active drug which is most commonly prescribed to relieve general anxiety disorders and related medical symptoms. The general anxiety disorder includes following symptoms:
-Anxiety
-Agitation
-Body shakeups
-Muscle cramps
-Seizures
-Insomnia
The drug is also a part of medical treatment plan for Alcohol Withdrawal and Benzodiazepine Withdrawal symptoms. Diazepam works on the central nervous system (the cerebral cortex and limbic system) and hence controls the activity of neuron to establish a balanced, normal state. The neuron activity is dependant on neurochemical levels in the brain. A normal human brain contains a balanced level of chemicals. When these balanced chemical levels are disturbed the neuron activity also becomes abnormal resulting in dysfunction of body systems. Anxiety disorders are also a result of such chemical imbalances in the brain. These chemicals levels determine the function of GABA receptors. When negative chloride ions are released excessively these receptors function abnormally. These receptors are responsible to decrease the excitability of the neurons. GABA receptors have binding channels which are activated by Diazepam. These binding channels inhibit the neuron activity and control the release of negative chloride ions. These channels also relax the muscles by inhibition through neural pathways in the spinal cord.
Diazepam –Availability
Diazepam is available in regions under different brand names. In United States, the drug is available as Valium and Diastat. In UK, diazepam is available as Dialar, Rimapam, Stesolid,Tensium, and diazemuls. In Canada, it is available with brand names Diastat, Valium, and Diazemuls. In India, Diazepam can be availed with brand names anxol, Paxum, Valium, Satrlium, and Zyclam.
Diazepam is available in the form of tablets for oral use and in liquid form for injection. The liquid diazepam is available in 500ml containers with 1mg of the drug per mg and in form of 30ml dropper bottles with 5mg of the drug per ml.
Liquid diazepam- Better than tablet and capsule form?
Liquid diazepam is preferred when used for Diazepam Withdrawal. Diazepam withdrawal is not made suddenly; in fact the drug dosage is made small gradually to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. During withdrawal of the drug, very close administration of the dosage is required and the drug is cut down to its percentage quantities. Such a percentage cut down is not possible with tablets or capsules; hence making the liquid forms an ideal solution. When a patient’s dosage reaches a decreased quantity of 5mg per day, the drug should be replaced with the liquid suspension of diazepam as the drug concentration in the liquid can be monitored in more precise way. Dropper bottles of liquid diazepam are marketed by Roxane as Diazepam Intensol in United States.
diazepam expiry date question
I honestly dont know if liquid diazepam has a shorter expiry date, but that is really short even if it does. I would go back to the pharmacy and speak to the pharmasist, they will be able to see from the sticker that it was prescribed.
How Should I Take Diazepam?
Measure the liquid form of diazepam with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Diazepam should be used for only a short time.
