What is Diazepam?
Diazepam is an active ingredient which helps to stabilize the chemical levels in the brain and the neuron activities. The Pfizer version to counter the popularity of diazepam contained hydroxyzine and was marketed with the brand name Vistaril. The decision ultimately proved to be the right as the drug soon gained acknowledgement from the medical advisors.
Pfizer’s Answer to Diazepam – Vistaril
Like Diazepam, Vistaril is also prescribed to relieve anxiety disorders. When compared to benzodiazepine (active ingredient of Diazepam), Vistaril showed similar efficacy to relieve general anxiety disorders. The mechanism of Vistaril functionality is also similar to Diazepam as the drug also inhibits the neuro functions bringing them down to normal level.
Pfizer Vistaril Vs Diazepam
Vistaril and Diazepam share many functional qualities. Both the drugs act on central nervous system and hence inhibit the neuronal activities. Vistaril and Diazepam also inhibit the neural trails, connecting brain to limbic system through spinal cord, and relax the muscles.
Vistaril contains hydroxyzine as an active ingredient and hence is sometimes preferred over diazepam and other benzodiazepines. Hydroxyzine is safer to use in cases of insomnia and day time anxiety as the drug can be easily cleared out form the body, the patient des not get dependent on the drug, and the drug does not provoke or stimulate any drug seeking behavior (DSB) in the patient.
Vistaril and Diazepam – A word of warning
Vistaril and diazepam are both known to be excreted in milk and hence should not be used if the mother has to nurse her child. Both the drugs should also be avoided during pregnancy.
